A hearing was held on Wednesday on the complaint by 44 employees and their families that the workers are suffering from cancer and other diseases due to radiation at work. Their attorney cited memos purportedly showing that safety problems led to the leak of radioactive substances.

He said there had been several cases of technical problems and it was not clear which he was being asked about. "Mishaps occur," [a witness for the defense, Dan] Litai told the court. "There have been mishaps there since the day [the Dimona facility] was built, and I assume there still are."

"Lethal," is how Avnery describes the current amendment to the bill drafted by MKs Meir Sheetrit (Kadima) and Yariv Levin (Likud), which would broaden the scope of compensation set in the 1965 law from NIS 50,000 to NIS 300,000 without need to prove damage.

Avnery says the threat of monetary damages can be much more damning to journalism than the threat of jail.

Nelle ultime ore sono andati avanti i combattimenti tra l’esercito e i disertori a Busar al Harir nella regione meridionale di Dara e nella località montagnosa di Luja, roccaforte del rivoltosi armati. Ieri l’agenzia ufficiale “Sana” aveva riferito dei funerali di 13 tra soldati e poliziotti morti negli scontri dei giorni scorsi e dell’uccisione di un ingegnere di Homs responsabile di una centrale di gas. Da parte loro i Comitati di coordinamento locali, una delle organizzazioni dell’opposizione, riferiscono di oltre sessanta persone uccise dalle forze armate governative, tra le quali una ragazza di 13 anni e due bambini rispettivamente di 2 e 5 anni.
