Jerusalem is aflame with what the Israeli writer Uri Avnery has called an “intifada of individuals,” as outbreaks of deadly violence have followed what began with Palestinian protests over fears of encroachment by Jewish extremists on the site in the Old City known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary. Five Israelis were killed last week in an attack on a synagogue. Palestinian citizens of Israel, meanwhile, are in turmoil over the Nov. 8 police shooting in northern Israel of a 22-year-old protester, which was caught on videotape.

In questi giorni il Parlamento Europeo ed i Parlamenti di alcune nazioni europee hanno proposto il “riconoscimento dello Stato di Palestina da parte dell’Unione Europea” e dei governi di Francia e Gran Bretagna. Altri parlamenti si apprestano a fare altrettanto, mentre il governo svedese ha già riconosciuto lo Stato di Palestina. L’Italia ci deve ancora pensare su, dato che il nostro Paese, in fatto di politica estera, non sembra una nazione indipendente, e vuole aspettare che siano chiari gli ordini che arrivano da chi è abituato ad essere ubbidito.

The policy led by PA President Mahmoud Abbas is based on several foundations. These include [...] dependence on international – mainly Western – assistance and faith in the United States’ support for establishing a Palestinian state; an authoritarian government that restricts criticism; opposing any military escalation and the use of arms against the occupation; paying lip service to an unarmed popular struggle while in fact restricting it and promoting a diplomatic strategy in the United Nations and the world.
