the debate about whether Israel is going to annex Area C is largely academic. The annexation has already taken place, just not formally. The advantage of this discreet method of annexation – what Israeli general Moshe Dayan once termed “creeping annexation” – is that Israel is under no pressure to confer citizenship on the few Palestinians remaining in Area C.
(Photo: Jonathan Cook) The brochure map provides a helpful illustration of Israeli thinking. It was created by the Tourism Ministry in 2007, before the current right-wing government of Benjamin Netanyahu came to power on a platform of tearing up the Oslo Accords. That was the period of Ehud Olmert's government, which was supposedly committed to reaching an agreement with the Palestinians based on a two-state solution.

Cari amici,
alla vigilia della prossima campagna elettorale, pubblichiamo l'elenco dei parlamentari che hanno votato la legge delega sulla riforma delle forze armate.
Una legge che:
1. taglia il personale per comperare i cacciabombardieri F35 e altre armi;
2. trasforma le Forze Armate in uno strumento da guerre ad alta intensità incompatibile con l'articolo 11 della Costituzione;
3. costringerà i comuni alluvionati o colpiti da una catastrofe naturale a pagare il conto dell'intervento dei militari;
4. non prevede alcuna cancellazione degli sprechi e dei privilegi né una vera riqualificazione della spesa militare;
5. impegna più di 230 miliardi per i prossimi 12 anni senza aumentare di un solo grado la nostra sicurezza;
6. aumenta di fatto la spesa pubblica;
7. toglie al prossimo Parlamento il diritto/dovere di fare una riforma vera ed efficace, fatta nel rispetto delle persone e per il bene del paese.
Se hanno intenzione di ricandidarsi vale la pena di chiedergli conto.

In the first of two interviews with EUROPP editors Stuart A Brown and Chris Gilson, Noam Chomsky discusses technocratic governance in Europe, why the eurozone’s austerity policies are failing to solve the crisis, and the rise of the far-right in countries such as Greece and France.
What do you think the use of technocratic governments in Europe says about European democracy?
There are two problems with it. First of all it shouldn’t happen, at least if anybody believes in democracy. Secondly, the policies that they’re following are just driving Europe into deeper and deeper problems. The idea of imposing austerity during a recession makes no sense whatsoever. There are problems, especially in the southern European countries, but in Greece the problems are not alleviated by compelling the country to reduce its growth because the debt relative to GDP simply increases, and that’s what the policies have been doing. In the case of Spain, which is a different case, the country was actually doing quite well up until the crash: it had a budget surplus. There were problems, but they were problems caused by banks, not by the government, including German banks, who were lending in the style of their US counterparts (subprime mortgages). So the financial system crashed and then austerity was imposed on Spain, which is the worst policy. It increases unemployment, it reduces growth; it does bail out banks and investors, but that shouldn’t be the prime concern.

Caro Manifesto,
non vi nascondo la nostra preoccupazione per le sorti de Il Manifesto, che mi è stato compagno per oltre tre decenni. Ma voglio parlare qui di un aspetto che a noi sembra tra i più rilevanti dell’azione del Manifesto: la sua costante attenzione al problema Palestina-Israele è stata unica, nel panorama della stampa italiana, nel corso degli anni. Il problema fondamentale dal punto di vista etico e politico, quello della difesa dei diritti a libertà, giustizia ed indipendenza del popolo Palestinese ha avuto sul Manifesto sostegno in più modi: con le vostre corrispondenze da Israele-Palestina, e dando spazio a molti interventi indipendenti, tra i quali i nostri. Quando tutti i grandi giornali italiani, schierati più o meno ossequientemente con le linee conformiste della politica occidentale dettata da Israele e Stati Uniti, accondiscendevano alle continue, sprezzanti violazioni delle delibere delle Nazioni Unite da parte di Israele, Il Manifesto dava informazioni accurate della situazione, con il proprio valoroso corrispondente da Gerusalemme e con l’ospitalità a collaboratori esterni, tra i quali è d’obbligo ricordare qui Vittorio Arrigoni, che durante la aggressione israeliana con imponenti mezzi militari contro la popolazione di Gaza nel 2008-2009, ha trovato su Il Manifesto spazio per le sue accurate e sofferte descrizioni degli eventi, nello stesso tempo sostenendo le ragioni, etiche e politiche, della cessazione della strage.
