Dr. Ilan Pappe spoke at the AICafe on 12 May 2012 about what he dubs the “false paradigm of peace”, or the Israeli-created paradigm through which the entire world – including the Palestinians – understand and relate to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In this engaging talk, Dr. Pappe discusses how Israel’s government took three strategic decisions following the June 1967 Middle East war which resulted in the construction of a “mega-prison.” In the mega-prison, Palestinians could gain privileges for good behaviour and collaboration (whether as individuals or groups, such as villages). Yet they could also be punished for resistance and non-compliance, in which case the mega-prison would become a maximum-security jail.
Dr. Pappe contends that the Israeli constructed paradigm, in which Israel would always either directly or indirectly control the West Bank and that it would remain the sole player to decide on the future of the area, has remained uncontested. A new paradigm should be offered.
