Israelis have come to expect another war by the summer. A third of their children, nearly a million, live in poverty, many of them going hungry. A health care system which was once a source of national pride, has been neglected into collapse. Israel is a nation which has been instructed by its leader to expect nothing, change nothing, roll over and play dead.

The time has come to end Israel's failed policy of closure and give hope to despairing Gazans.

Since the end of the war in the last summer, the number of Gazans who attempted to sneak into Israel in order to look for work increased. Their willingness to risk arrest, injury or even death attests to their despair. Israel cannot ignore this despair and treat it as merely a security issue requiring some technical solution.
