The motion, which passed "easily," was entitled "Palestinian Self-Determination and the Movement for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions" and calls for the organization to utilize BDS with regard to "sectors of Israel's economy and society which profit from the ongoing occupation of the occupied Palestinian territories."

A German diplomat explained the other problems related to taking Israel's side in the EU: “More and more European states are against Israel’s behavior and we cannot achieve, let’s say, a better-worded resolution against Jerusalem every time, as it is always about compromises. And we need compromises in many EU affairs affecting Germany, so the other states say: You want to help Israel again? Fine, but then you need to give us something for it. The truth is, Israel’s support inside the EU is vanishing. Germany, being almost alone as [its] defender, can’t do too much.”

the last time he visited here, before Israeli settlers had set up a base in the city, he saw Palestinians moving around freely and businesses that were thriving. Perhaps because the last time he visited here, checkpoints manned by the Israel Defense Forces were not stationed at every corner. Perhaps because the last time he visited here, no streets or neighborhoods were declared off-limits to Palestinians. Or perhaps because during those visits, he was not greeted by rows upon rows of empty shops sealed shut by military order.

The story of what happened in Morocco in October 2016 should make anyone who piled the Arab Spring on the ash heap of history shiver. A fishmonger named Mouhcine Fikri, 31, from the city of Al Hoceima on the Mediterranean Sea, had fresh swordfish on display at his stand. Swordfish weren’t in season at the time, and out-of-season sales are banned by law.

This extreme measure that the Netanyahu government has chosen to take against opponents of the occupation, including Diaspora Jews who are otherwise entitled to immigrate to Israel, raises questions not only about this government’s ability to contend with legitimate criticism in a democratic society, but also about the antidemocratic tools that were chosen to fight it.
