the Shin Bet wants us to believe that several of its functionaries have become security risks, and therefore their permanent exit permits were revoked. Just as it wants me to be persuaded that a female banker has turned dangerous and a teen with cancer, who has been treated in Israel since childhood and currently needs a jaw transplant in Haifa, has become dangerous.

Dayan is no hypocrite. He knows full well that the commanders who served under his uncle, Moshe Dayan — who was chief of staff during the 1956 Sinai operation and defense minister during the Six-Day War in 1967 — committed war crimes. In at least three instances, battalion commanders whose subordinates ordered soldiers to murder prisoners became chief of staff or defense minister. These atrocities began in the War of Independence in 1948, were treated leniently (there was a general amnesty during the early days of the state), and continued uninterrupted and unreported. Last week, Haaretz revealed one such case of Israel Defense Forces soldiers murdering dozens of prisoners from an Arab army during one of Israel’s wars.

Settlers, typically from the so-called “illegal outposts,” walked freely into lands farmed by Palestinians and planted their own crops. When the Palestinian farmers arrived, they were threatened, beaten, and in some cases shot (either by settlers or by soldiers acting on their behalf).

Flawed as it may be, the two-state solution at least has some logic to it. Friedman’s (and by assertion, the Trump campaign’s) vision does not. No one – certainly not Netanyahu and (probably) not Friedman – is suggesting that settlers become Palestinian citizens who pay taxes to Palestine and abide by its laws, as the Palestinians citizens of Israel do.
