The American Friends Service Committee logo
The American arm of the so-called Quaker Friends Societies, the American Friends Service Committee, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1947 in general recognition of the humanitarian wartime aid Quakers have provided throughout modern history, but specifically for the role played by AFSC in saving Christians and Jews from the Nazis during World War II. Unlike most Christian organizations, which helped only Christians, AFSC did not differentiate between faiths and thus became one of the most active non-Jewish organizations saving Jews.

Most Palestinians, in contrast, aren’t Israeli citizens, and for those who are, their citizenship is both Class D and conditional. There is always legislation in the pipeline that will further reduce their status. And the Palestinians who aren’t citizens don’t count at all, because they have no right to vote. It’s always possible to imagine and plan for their expulsion from this land, not merely their arrest.

It was what I would call incremental ethnic cleansing. In some cases they expelled droves of people from certain areas such as Jericho, the Old City of Jerusalem, and around Qalqilya. But in most cases they decided that military rule and a siege to enclose Palestinians in their own areas would be as beneficial as expelling them.
