If Beirut has been a city for 37 centuries and Paris for 20, why doesn’t anyone refer to explosions in Beirut as attacks on music, culture, civilization? Why don’t all the stories start with how ancient and rich with history it is, how in all those centuries of invasions, occupations, wars, it was never abandoned, how it keeps raising its head?

I wanted to make sure you know how we are responding to the enormously distressing escalation in Islamophobic rhetoric and scapegoating of refugees in the wake of the attack on Paris. As JVP Artist's Council member Aurora Levins Morales illustrated in this poem better than I ever could, the disparity in the public reaction to Paris, as compared to Beirut, or Mali, or Ankara, or Baghdad, is breathtaking.

Palestinians living under Israeli military occupation experience daily injustices: mass arrests, arbitrary detentions, military raids, separate and unequal legal systems, road closures, restrictions on travel, and settler attacks. However, only when Israeli Jews are killed does the region make the news in the United States and pundits start talking about “escalating violence” and “rising tensions.”

Paola, did you see Michael's email on Friday? Last night, we held a rally outside JNF's donor reception, and I shared my story. I was on the Washington DC board of the JNF for 2 years, and for a long time, I wanted to believe that they were just another charity. But they're not -- the JNF is a major international supporter of land theft and dispossession. I resigned from the JNF board when they were publicly caught stealing a home in East Jerusalem and giving it to right wing settlers, and now I'm an activist with JVP. At JVP, we're fighting hard to stop the JNF's racist policies of segregation and discrimination -- but we need you to stand with us. Onwards, Seth Morrison.

According to this view, the settlers have violated the 1967 borders, the settlers are stealing Palestinian land, the settlers are engaged in violence and “price tag” attacks against Palestinians. The settlers are preventing peace.
