On the day of Kayed’s scheduled release at the end of his 14-year term, with his family and his town primed to celebrate the event, the Israeli authorities informed him that he was being relegated to “administrative detention” – arrest without trial. No explanation was offered. Kayed responded by launching a hunger strike that went on for 71 days and almost finished him off. The authorities offered him a four-year exile in Jordan. He refused. Finally, in August, he agreed to an arrangement under which he would be released in four months’ time if he called off his hunger strike. The four months finished last week. The late-summer house of mourning had been transformed into a site of celebration at the onset of winter.

Roma, 7 febbraio 2017, Nena News – Secondo fonti diplomatiche occidentali e arabe, Washington ha ammonito i dirigenti palestinesi che, qualora denunciassero Israele nei tribunali internazionali, andrebbero incontro a gravi misure da parte dell’amministrazione statunitense, quali la chiusura degli uffici dell’OLP nella capitale americana e la cessazione degli aiuti economici all’Autorità palestinese.
